Influence

The real political power

Political power doesn’t exist only in government. People, organizations, institutions, money, movements, and ideas all compete to influence what government does and what citizens believe. Some of that influence is visible. Much of it receives considerably less attention.

Here we examine the forces seeking to shape political decisions and public life—from religious and ideological movements to wealthy donors, corporations, advocacy organizations, lobbyists, political leaders, and organized interest groups. The purpose isn’t to assume that influence is inherently improper. It is to understand who has influence, how they exercise it, and what effect it may have on democracy.
